After mastering the art of mediocre digital painting, I decided that learning Corel Painter is more trouble than it’s worth. Yet the burning desire for creation remained. How will the aspiring digital painter (me) bring his ideas to the adoring populace? The answer? Use a program I already know. That’s called efficiency, bitches. Behold, another couple of crappy paintings and a good one!

I’m typically into drawing fun stuff, so why not recycle the alien motif? Results were mediocre enough that I didn’t even bother slapping the URL at the bottom. However, I learned an important lesson – This looks kinda creepy! I decided to up the weird factor and draw a desiccated zombie.

Kinda creepy I guess. Got some drippy blood and stuff. Then again, years of listening to heavy metal has given me a stratospheric threshold for morbid art. Maybe this image is actually scary as hell if you’re a typical suburbanite who wears socks and sandals while transporting Ritalin-fueled elementary schoolers to and from soccer practice.

I digress. The main image was created with Illustrator and imported the results into Photoshop. With a few tweaks and texture work, suddenly the image looks a lot more like a watercolor painting. Still not great, but getting better. How about round 3, folks? Can he create something that’s actually worth looking at? Time to fire up the new Gorguts album and find out.

Pretty cool, eh? That is, if you’re into disembodied, bisected heads floating above a sea of grasping shadow hands in a land of blackened suns and bloodied skies. I know I am! Get ready for more weird, metal-inspired digital paintings crawling their way out of the crypt.
